Understanding the world from all angles...

Help Channel Indulgence Into ArtOne of Margo's pictures from our trip across Europe.

Strength and dignity are her clothing...

Proverbs 31:25

Author's Note: I have been enjoined from sharing the details of my true romance adventure until such time that the other party is prepared to present her perspective on the affair arrangement...Pointer

By the end of my first week in Europe in 2011, I had bought a car and out of the blue had met the woman who would join me on a 6,000 mile trek across the European continent, sharing the beat-up car that I had bought and the one small tent from Walmart that I had brought along with me on my flight.

Though as an artist I had been working on body acceptance since the start of my career, and as a one-time practicing figure model was used to being nude in a social setting, I had been left largely unexposed to the community of naturists and nudists working towards the same goal of promoting the human being. Visiting nude beaches and resorts along the East Coast and participating in events organized around New York by Young Naturists America, I was left hungry for more and had come to Europe to see things from their side of the pond. Margo was my introduction.

I was American. Freshly arrived in Europe and the new owner of a '97 Ford Escort made in Germany. The only thing I had to complain about was the fact that the owner's manual was in German. She was from Poland, and a German-language owner's manual for a car bought in Poland wasn't the only thing she had to complain about. Something as small as that didn't even register.

Do unto others as you would have done unto you. But how to judge what we would want done to us if we've never been in somebody else's shoes? If we've never been abandoned by our mother, how do we treat somebody who has? Somebody who seems to constantly suffer the repurcussions of it? Margo and I had 46 days and 6,000 miles to try on each other's shoes. We had one car and one tent in which to hear each other's words. We learned to cooperate. We started learning how to listen.

One of Margo's pictures from our trip across Europe.

THE DISAPPEARING WOMAN, THE DISAPPEARING MAN...Pointer

a collection of modern art prints and posters

During our trip across Europe, Margo very bravely opened up to me and to the camera. It was a difficult thing to do considering the scars that she carries. I wanted to share with the world her often joyful, often sad, often angry but always liberating experience except that the Internet is full of pictures of naked women and men and full of trolls who abuse them.

I realized that what I really need to point out is not the openness that Margo and I cultivated between ourselves, but the darkness that continues to surround us. When I censor nudity, I do so in a way that does not compromise the integrity of the human body. In censoring the photographs that Margo and I took during our trip, I was quick to notice that in those pictures where Margo was at her most open, at her most unguarded and most relaxed, in a word, when she was herself and basking in the sun I was forced to blacken her completely.

Why does our society drive people into darkness? Why can we not accept ourselves as we are? Why can we not accept our bodies? Have we truly become eunuchs? Or are we capable of defying the sickness that pits us against each other? Together we could conquer the devils that abuse us.

Whether you enjoy being nude or not, whether you've been photographed nude or not, but especially if, for you, like for Margo, it's something you never thought you would do, consider submitting your own photograph to be published in a censored manner as a form of protest against the ubiquitous presence of the human body on the internet, naked or not, that is published and duplicated ad infinitum without context and without regard for the identity or the needs of the individual being depicted.

Michal's Dictionary:
All about Rothko

Capitalism describes a system of asset management which relies on the ownership of fuel.

Capitialism is itself a feul that somebody needs to own.

To own something is to be responsible for it. When a man disassociates himself from capitalism he is not only choosing not to assume any responsibility over it, he is depriving himself of a very valuable fuel. He isn't burning it.

When people stop burning fuel, the economy grows cold and shrinks. The more people start to accept capitalism, the sonner they can start to learn how to burn fuel responsibly.

Appearance of Rothko in The Gospel of Jesus H.

A picture of the planet Mars

An experimental science fiction Christology that makes Jesus the hard boiled narrator of his own early years on a bizarro earth made dark by volcanic ash and informally ruled by a man from Mars who sells bottled air.

Getting off at the station, I walked south to the main branch of the Oder. On the other side, Wroclaw University sprawled itself across the bank. Its distinguished halls were said to be occupied by terrorists. University Bridge was being guarded by Union troops. Good thing I was turning left. When I got to Prusa 42, I pressed all the buzzers. Somebody let me in. On the wall, I saw the name Rothko written across one of the mailboxes. I'm in the right place, I thought to myself. Two flights of stairs and there it was: Marc Rothko, number four. I knocked on the door and waited. The opposite door opened.

Verse 797 from the chapter called Adolescence

"Are you a terrorist?" asked the grandmother.

"No," I said. "Go back inside."

She closed her door. My door opened.

"Who are you?" said the man.

"Marc Rothko?" I said.

"Yeah, that's right," he said. "Who are you?"

"Step back," I said, pulling out my gun.

He stepped back; I walked inside. I slammed the door shut.

"What do you want?" he asked.

Verses 798-806 from the chapter called Adolescence

"Marc Rothko."

"Give me an address," I said.

"Prusa 42, in Wroclaw."

Verses 789-791 from the chapter called Adolescence

Appearance of Rothko in Sex for Children

A drawing of a man between a woman's legs in front of another man in a hospital bed

A literature book narrated by a pair of siblings on either side of the Atlantic whose profoundly weird sexual experiences pose a serious challenge to their traditional understanding of mathematicians, marriage, gay young men and God.

Only after the police left and the doctors went about their business did Rothko, finally, have enough courage to stray within range. But by then, Nike had calmed himself down. Or, perhaps, it wasn't a matter of calming down: perhaps he had been performing for the benefit of those doctors. They were going to decide when and if he were ready for release, and Nike was in quite a hurry. But, nevertheless, I'm sure he was performing especially for the police: he probably thought he had something to prove. At the very least, he had to make a proper show for that Christian fellow. He couldn't help but notice the irony that Christian was now working for him.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 2, Science & Reform Schools, Section 8, Being a Victim, Paragraph 3

Nike soon turned his attention to complaining. He blamed Rothko for calling him. He blamed Luka for acting like an imbecile. But Rothko claimed he only had himself to blame, especially for giving a prostitute, however finely dressed, a thousand Euro. "I got what I paid for," said Nike. "I'm not complaining about that. I was desperate; I had to do something short of raping her. I mean: I had to give her something and that was all I had. But then you guys had to fuck it up for me."

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 23, The Effects of Poverty, Paragraph 2

The two searchers got in the car and sat down in the backseat, preparing a pipe while Luka drove. There was no conversation: Nike was very impatient, Luka was nervous and Rothko was just being himself, a professional. Consequently, the opium was ready long before the end of the drive was reached.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 23, The Effects of Poverty, Paragraph 4

"Keep your eyes open, Luka - and look for that woman! I have to find her no matter what it takes." Nike took a long, deep drag. His lungs held it for a while, for a very good, long while. "Marc. Oh, man. Luka: please park in a good place," Nike said, exhaling. "We have to find her." But Luka said nothing. Rothko was now smoking, so Nike looked out the window at the freak show. How disgusting, he thought. And then he took another drag of opium: a short one. Then Rothko had one more drag, and they were done, the rest being left for Luka, the unfortunate chauffeur. His passengers were already relaxing, but he was still looking for a good place to park, and finally, stopping in a good spot, he turned around and took the pipe.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 2, The Second Day, Part 1, Labor & Economic Reform, Section 23, The Effects of Poverty, Paragraph 5

I had another dream last night, by the way. I suppose I've got plenty of time to describe it to you. It begins in the hospital, in a room not unlike the one in which I find myself. But, of course, in the dream, it seemed much more spacious. It was crowded with people, most of which I didn't recognize. Except for Rothko, they were all doctors and police officers. They were all very interested in seeing the patient: to see whether his condition was really improved - that is to say, whether all his members were functioning appropriately.

– Title 3, Regarding a Dream, Chapter 5, The Fifth Day, Part 2, Science & Reform Schools, Section 8, Being a Victim, Paragraph 1

Appearance of Rothko in Tsiga Tsiga Tsiga

Bullets whizzing by a statue of Nikola Tesla

A collection of stories featuring a sexy Parisian ghost, a spooky Moon base full of vagina-faced aliens, a policeman with an Irish name, a truck full of watermelons, a flautist, and a man who has to see another man about a diseased horse.

Rothko blamed Nike. "You should never have offered her Coke. How are you going to pay for the dope?"

"You don't take checks?"

Rothko shook his head.

– from “Paris Is For Rapists, Too,” a ghost story featuring a bewildered man

Nike laughed. "Keep your eyes open. Tell me if you see her." He took a deep drag from the pipe. He held it. He held it some more. He kept holding it. Rothko checked his watch. Nike exhaled. "This is good," he said. "I think I'm done." He offered the pipe to Rothko.

"No, thanks." He waved. "I'm off."

– from “Paris Is For Rapists, Too,” a ghost story featuring a frank discussion of the sex trade

Nike took out the phone. The display spelled out the name, D-Boy: Rothko. Nike flipped it open. "Yo?"

"Kita!" cried the voice on the other end. "What's goin' on? You lookin' for a buzz?"

"I've been trying to reach you."

"Playa, playa! You know what they say. Allow me to call you."

"I'm on the Reine."

"North or south?"

Nike looked around. "I'm not sure."

– from “Paris Is For Rapists, Too,” a ghost story set in a forest in Paris

"If you happen to see a hooker," mentioned Nike.

"I know," said Rothko. "I'll call."

Nike watched him leave. He passed the pipe up front. Luka packed the charred opium. He fired a lighter. He puffed.

Nike stared at the freaks through the window. His eyelids grew heavy.

– from “Paris Is For Rapists, Too,” a ghost story featuring poverty

"I don't have time."

"Do you want my business?"

Rothko tried. It was useless. There was no sign of a white cloak-no veil, no guimpe, no scapular. It was like she was a ghost.

Nike sulked in the back seat. He blamed Luka. "Why did you stop?"

Luka shrugged. "She told me to."

"Do you always do what you're told?"

"I'm married."

Natural + Life

Large Wall Art Depicting the Human Landscape

Life is a spinning sphere with Joy at one pole and Sadness at the other. Each continuously feeding its pair. Joy flanked by the emotions of Trust on one side, Surprise on the other. Trust leading to Anticipation; anticipation leading to Fear. Surprise leading to Disgust; disgust leading to Anger. Anger and Fear fueling our Sadness. Sadness giving way, in time, to Joy; through Hope, an orientation towards Love. Love, an openness towards Joy, Trust and Surprise; the sum of emotion; emotion amplified by others. Multiplied and divided, in equal parts. Such that to those from whom it has been subtracted, we must add. Until we are whole.
